maternity session with the fitzroys photography
Working out what to wear can feel like the most stressful thing about having family portraits taken. This guide is here to guide and inspire you, and hopefully take some of that stress away. Keep in mind that it is not an exact formula nor is it a prescription of what you HAVE to wear.
One thing to keep in mind is that I always and ONLY shoot flattering angles and positions (for Mums AND Dads).
Hair and makeup. It is important to have your hair styled and wear a little makeup, enough to feel beautiful. Because being yourself is the most beautiful thing you could wear so I always advise to try and not to over do it. You can do it yourself or pay a pro, either way it’s your time and your day so don’t hesitate to spoil yourself and feel as glamorous as you are - you’re doing the most important job in the world and deserve to feel amazing!
Ladies: When choosing a dress, look for soft, natural fabrics that drape and flow. These make for beautiful portraits and give a sense of motion. Also If you have a dress or a top that you love and would like to wear, I encourage you to bring it, it is your session so you can wear what you like! I personally love feminine and flowy style of tops and dresses on a mum, as it seems to compliment my style and the mood of the images.
Available for you to use on the day of your session is my collection of dresses that I have build up over the years with the ideal dresses in mind. We’ll have time for approximately 2-3 outfit changes and most gowns in the closet are ‘one suit all’, making it versatile for almost all belly shapes and sizes.
Whilst I have a maternity wardrobe in studio, my clients are eligible to a discount with the most amazing online maternity dress rental store Mama Rentals. When making a purchase with Mama Rentals, for the 15% discount - amazing, I know! Some clients have borrowed a dress that’s been used during Maternity session and also at their baby shower, which is a great way to make the most of borrowing a gown.

Here is one of the more popular American photographers using dresses as a prop during her sessions: inspiration
What to wear subject is quite important and plays great part in the session outcome. Clothing and styling can make the difference to an ‘ok’ image to something really special. What I have to say is all well and good, but you know what colours suit you, what style suits you, and what is YOU! So, please above anything else - DRESS FOR YOU!
For family members: Avoid heavy patterns, and n big brands or logos on clothing please. We don't want to be distracted by over the top patterns or logos that will very quickly date
Please do not wear black or navy or burgundy - dark colours make person photographed look older. Choose colours to pick up the beautiful nature colours. Neutrals such as soft pinks, cream, muted blues, soft greens and white all photograph extremely well
When in doubt select one patterned outfit for a single person in the family and then pull colours from that pattern to dress everyone else in solid colours to coordinate
Bring a change of clothes or backup dress/shirt/bottoms for little ones. But Please don’t bring outfit changes for your children (as in, having different clothing to be photographed in), as the session is mainly focused on you and whilst it might not seem like it, its incredibly time consuming to change outfits
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I can’t wait to meet you!
